Valentine’s Day is traditionally for sweethearts, but there are a lot of people out there that deserve our appreciation. And others that could probably use a little love. (photo caption: In 2012, CCCF staff delivered treats to the Columbia City Police Department.)

There are so many little and big ways anyone – young or old – can help others. Whether it’s through a donation, act or something so simple as holding the door for a stranger and wishing them a good morning.

Random Acts of Kindness Week - February 11-17

Random Acts of Kindness Week is happening now. Don’t worry; it’s not too late to get started. Check out the RAK Week site for loads of great ideas on how you can participate. You’ll be surprised by how easy it can be. Also be sure to share your acts on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or Instagram using the hashtag #RAKWeek. On Twitter today we found great ideas for helping caregivers and some playful acts of kindness that are fun for anyone.

Generosity Day – February 14

In its third year, on Valentines Day we’re also going to celebrate Generosity Day.  In lieu of flowers, candy and cards the idea is to re-program our annual celebration of ‘all things love’ into the real deal. The goal? To come together to generate a million acts of kindness and generosity. And you might be surprised by how far your ‘little’ contribution will go. Be sure to report your actions at the site and be part of the movement! Learn more here.

In addition to amazing ideas both RAK Week and Generosity Day organizers have provided, we thought we’d share a little list of ways you can get involved locally. Here are some easy ways you can ‘share the love’ this Valentine’s!

  1. Help a Neighbor. We are surrounded by people that could use a little helping hand. Perhaps you have a neighbor that is elderly, sick, has numerous children, works a lot or might just be a little lonely. Offer them a helping hand: roll out their trash, rake their yard, bring them a meal or invite them to a movie.
  2. Give instead of Gift.  Instead of flowers or candy, how about a donation. Maybe your sweetheart has a soft spot for homeless pets? Make a donation in their honor to Pawmetto Lifeline. Think about what your loved one truly cares about and make a donation to a corresponding organization. It doesn’t get much more thoughtful or meaningful than that.
  3. Treats for service. It’s easy to forget that there are people in our lives that choose to provide a service. Bake cookies or a cake and take it to your local fire department, police station or library.
  4. Treats and a little love. There are many in our community that might need a little hug. Prepare homemade treats and take them to a local children’s home, domestic violence shelter, homeless shelter or home for those with disabilities. Be sure to call in advance.
