TAG Question of the Week

For many children, the thought of parting with a $10 bill doesn’t sound so great. But initiating this conversation with the understanding that they HAVE to give it away will help them get beyond the money and thinking about with whom they would like to share.

As adults, we support organizations that we care about. It could be your place of worship, your alma mater or another cause near and dear to you. Helping children explore what matters most to them and why and how we can support it will help make that feeling that influences us to give more tangible and real.

JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation recently initiated a new tradition in her family. Her teenage nephews have always received a birthday gift from her and her husband, Ernie. But in addition to receiving some item from their wish list, they also receive a check and the money has to be given away. They research the organization that they would like to see benefit and report back to their aunt and uncle about why they have selected that cause and how the money will be used. A great lesson in sharing and introduction to ensuring that your money will be used as you wish.

So what do your children care about? If they had to share $10 today, to whom would they give? Find out using the Question of the Week!

Published every other Friday, use the Question of the Week to spark conversation with your children about family, money, giving and help them explore what matters most to them.
